If fine and carefully manufactured, wooden tablets spoil your hands and give you a sensitve experience in weaving as never before.
Technical Facts:
Three layers of thin wood, crossing their directions, make the tablets strong with a thickness of just 1mm (+/- 10%).
I prefer Beech; this wood has a very close grain with fine and strong fibres. Other woods are either too soft or not as fine in stucture or not available in such thin plates with pleasing qualitiy.
(Yes, I tested Birch from 15 Traders … in long-term-tests it always failed).

Manufacturing:
I get the wood in large plates. From 2001 to autumn 2015 I started my own work by cutting them to square pieces, grinding the edges to measures exactly matching each other, rounding the corners and then drilling small holes.
Next step was grinding the holes to a larger diameter and remove the splinters from drilling.
Since autumn 2015 I give the plates to an external laser-cutter who makes it to this point for me; so I can start with the real work without making the blanks myself. This saves me about 40% of time, costs me exactly the worth of this time and my unbeaten quality increased by another percent.
“Real work” means grinding and grinding and grinding the edges of the holes until they are perfectly smooth curves leading into the holes (and certainly the outer edges of the tablets).
This is the important main-part oft the work. Now that I no longer have to prepare the blanks myself, I can concentrate on this even better than befor and my to-do-list does not grow as long as before.
For individual shapes and sizes I still prepare the blanks myself.
